    COMMUNICATION MODELS AND COMMON BASIS FOR MULTICULTURAL COMMUNICATION IN LATVIA

    Different models serve not only as a frame for communication, they can help to rise problems as well as discuss them. This article introduces with the four communication models starting from Aristotle’s triangle model and ending with a more contemporary one. The authors try to find out, which is the most appropriate model for intercultural communication in Latvia? The empirical data collected from two focus-groups representing different cultures in Latvia serves as a base for interpretation of current situation where communication challenges can occur as a result of interaction between people with different cultural backgrounds. The article approves the idea to elaborate the new specific model for multicultural communication, and after analysis highlights the base and components of this new model.

    Communication privacy management of students in Latvia

    The lack of communication privacy boundaries among students and the fault of self-disclosure are two main reasons for unforeseen distress, broken relationships and trust, vulnerability and conflicts in universities. Based on S. Petronio’s theory of communication privacy management this research investigates the interaction of domestic students and foreign students in Latvia with their peers in order to set up privacy and disclosure boundaries that do not violate peer privacy, especially in a sensitive multicultural context. In fact, the presence of private information and the willingness to disclose it is often confronted with numerous privacy dilemmas and issues regarding their secureness, especially in universities where peers are young with different cultural backgrounds. This article analyzes the privacy management skills of locals and foreigners and reveals how security of information is managed between them stemming from social penetration and communication privacy management theory.     Choice of the Acetabular Component Placement in Dysplastic Hip Patients

Many orthopedic surgeons concur that the anatomical placement of the acetabular components of endoprostheses (AC-EPs) during THA yields the best result. However, there are advocates of the high rotation center of the hip joint after replacement surgery. In our study, we compared the outcomes of THA based on the placement of acetabular cups to identify the most favorable site for AC-EPs in patients with varying grades of dysplastic osteoarthritis. Our study included 88 patients with dysplastic hip osteoarthritis who underwent 106 THAs during a three-year period using cementless fixation endoprostheses. Functional results were assessed by Merle d'Aubigne and Postel's method and by instrumental gait analysis (IGA). Gait deviation index was calculated based on IGA to compare results in different acetabular component placement groups. Functional assessment of patients by Merle d'Aubigne and Postel's grading method and IGA showed no significant difference in results due to the placement of the acetabular component. Most complications were found in the severe dysplasia patients group with the anatomical placement of the AC-EP. The appropriate location of cementless acetabular cups during THA in dysplastic hips depends on the grade of dysplasia, expected elongation of the leg, and the potential for adequate bone coverage for the AC-EP. In cases of severe dysplasia, the placement of the AC-EP in the secondary socket can provide a good functional outcome and reduce the risk of complications.publishersversionPeer reviewe

    Development of Temperature Process Control Method Using Smith Predictor

    The analysis of a problem of development of control systems for objects with big time delay is carried out in this work. For such objects it is difficult to provide high-quality control, because the control is carried on the last status of object’s output. The main setup methods of PID regulators have been examined. Based on this analysis the technique of complete synthesis of the regulator of higher level is given in order to regulate building’s heating system. This work offers a new method of object’s control with distributed delay. As the test bed for the offered structure of control the valve of hot water supply in a heat-node is used. Using the test bed the stability of the system with time delay have been studied, which is controlled by the PID-regulator assisted by Smith Predictor used to compensate the dead time
